Overview

Kilkea Castle is one of Ireland’s oldest inhabited castles, with a history stretching back to the 12th century. Located near Castledermot in County Kildare, this magnificent medieval stronghold combines centuries of Irish history with the comforts of a modern luxury hotel and golf resort.

Surrounded by approximately 180 acres of woodland, landscaped gardens and parkland, Kilkea Castle offers visitors a memorable setting for dining, overnight stays, golf and special occasions. Its impressive stone towers, battlements and historic interiors retain the character of a medieval fortress.

History of Kilkea Castle

Kilkea Castle traces its origins to 1180, when Hugh de Lacy established a stronghold on the site. It later became closely associated with the powerful FitzGerald family, Earls of Kildare, who held the property for centuries.

The castle witnessed generations of political change, conflict and transformation. Much of its surviving architectural character reflects later medieval rebuilding, particularly during the 15th century.

One of Kilkea's most intriguing historical figures is Gerald FitzGerald, the 11th Earl of Kildare, remembered as the Wizard Earl. According to local legend, he possessed magical powers and was said to return to the castle every seven years on a white horse.

After extensive restoration, Kilkea Castle reopened as a luxury hotel, preserving its medieval atmosphere while introducing modern facilities.
