Donadea Forest Park – A Journey Through Nature & Memory
Tucked away in northwest County Kildare, Donadea Forest Park stretches over 243 hectares of mixed woodland. Once the grand estate of the Aylmer family, it's now a public sanctuary where history and nature meet in quiet harmony.
A Place Rich with Stories
Donadea was home to the Aylmer family from the mid-16th century until 1935. Their legacy is still visible: castle ruins, walled gardens slowly reclaimed by greenery, a tidy lime-tree avenue that once marked the main entrance, St. Peter's church and tower, an old ice house, and a boathouse by the lake—all whisper stories of centuries past. The final Aylmer, Caroline, passed away in 1935. The estate moved to the Church of Ireland, then ultimately to the State. In 1981, it was officially opened to the public as Donadea Forest Park, a National Heritage Area.
What You'll See Today
Historic Ruins and Architecture: Wander among the ivy-clad walls of the old castle and estate buildings. Peer into the walled gardens, stroll past a Georgian church tower, or glimpse the ice house hiding near the woods.
A Serene Lake
A 2.3-hectare pond is home to ducks, waterhens, and host to carpets of water lilies in summer. The Lake Walk is a short, accessible loop lined with benches—perfect for slowing down and watching the wildlife. Walking Trails for All: Choose from three looped paths: Lake Walk (~0.8 km, 30 min): flat and wheelchair-friendly, ideal for families or a gentle stretch. Nature Trail (~1.6 km, 1 hr): winds through woodland and estate features, easy-going. Aylmer Walk (~5.7 km, 1½ hr): a longer loop that circles much of the park and qualifies as a “Slí na Sláinte” health walk. Orienteering Courses: If you're up for a bit of navigation challenge, three permanent orienteering routes await (Short: 1.8 km; Medium: 3.4 km; Long: 4.6 km). 9/11 Memorial: A scaled limestone replica of the Twin Towers stands here in memory of Sean Tallon, a firefighter whose family hailed from Donadea. It's a quiet tribute, tucked into the forest amid the greenery. Facilities & Practical Details Café & Picnic Spots: A cosy café opens year-round, offering light meals and hot drinks—perfect after a walk. Picnic tables are scattered through the park too. Access & Parking: The car park operates fully cash-free (€5 fee via card or app). It opens at 7 am (Apr–Sep) or 8 am (Oct–Mar), and closes at 9 pm (Apr–Sep) or 7 pm (Oct–Mar). Expect queues on busy weekends. Facilities: There are toilets (available during café hours), picnic areas, and a good space for dog walks (on a lead).
Best Times to Visit
Early weekday mornings or late afternoons are calmest. Spring brings carpets of bluebells and wild garlic; summer showcases water lilies, while autumn packs the trails with fiery foliage.
