Overview

Boston Hill is a rural hillside area in north County Kildare, close to Oughterard, Ardclough and Kill. It is best understood as part of the wider Oughterard heritage landscape rather than as a single built monument. The area sits near the route between Ardclough and Kill and is associated with open countryside, elevated views, and nearby historic sites including Oughterard Round Tower, Oughterard Castle and the old cemetery.

Why it matters

Boston Hill helps frame the historic setting of Oughterard, one of the notable heritage areas on Arthur’s Way. The Arthur’s Way route identifies Boston Hill, an ancient Slí route, Oughterard Castle, and the graveyard and round tower as features in this part of the trail.

The surrounding landscape is also archaeologically sensitive. Excavations.ie records Boston Hill, Oughterard, Straffan, as being close to the zone of notification for a deserted settlement and close to Oughterard church and round tower, which are National Monuments in State ownership.

What to notice

The main appeal of Boston Hill is its landscape setting. Look for the rising ground, views across the surrounding countryside, the quiet rural roads, and the connection between the hill and nearby Oughterard. A local walking-history account notes that the hill opposite Farm Hill is known as Boston Hill, placing it within the historic Ardclough–Lyons–Oughterard landscape.

Visiting Boston Hill

Boston Hill is not a formal visitor attraction with dedicated facilities. It is best appreciated as part of a wider visit to Oughterard or as a point of local landscape interest near Arthur’s Way. Use public roads and marked routes, avoid entering private land without permission, and take care on narrow rural roads.

For a stronger visitor experience, combine Boston Hill with nearby Oughterard Cemetery and Round Tower, Oughterard Castle, or the Arthur’s Way walking and cycling route.
